Wait, what?? Yes, this winter, I (Gary) will be heading back to Spain for the sixth time. This time I will be starting in early January for the walk from Saint Jean Pied de Port in France to Santiago. Previously we have started in April, May, July and August, so this will be a much quieter walk as there will be a fraction of the number of pilgrims. In May there can be over 300 pilgrims starting a day. In January the number is closer to 20. Elizabeth has decided to enjoy the Phoenix weather, so I will be heading out solo. Like on the AT or the Portuguese Route last year, there are always new friends to be made.
Northern Spain does have winter. I will probably encounter snow, especially in the higher elevations. The nice thing about the Camino (compared to the AT) is that I will be inside every night. I honestly am looking forward to having “some weather” to deal with. From what I have read, a typical low will be about 30 and the daytime highs should be in the upper 40s. We shall see what reality becomes.
